Today, I'm going to share how to color your hair naturally, with products that you can find in your pantry.
Sounds pretty cool, huh?!
There is a catch....
The catch is, that you can't have the best of both worlds. If you are looking to change your hair drastically, (and damage it) in a few hours, then these tricks aren't for you.
BUT, if you want to lighten or darken your hair, with safe ingredients that are not damaging and are actually GOOD for your hair....
Then read on :)
1. Honey and cidnnamon to lighten hair
How it works: It turns out that there is a bit of hydrogen peroxide in honey, and the cinnamon activates it. Who knew! So amazing! I personally used this method and left it in over night, 2 nights in a row. It's a bit sticky--but totally worth it.
Just wrap your head with a plastic bag and sleep on a towel. I'm sure you've made greater sacrifices in the name of beauty. ;) You will use approximately 3 parts honey, to one part cinnamon, and you can optionally add a squeeze of lemon.
The mixture needs to sit for at least 30 minutes (an hour is better) for the cinnamon to activate the hydrogen peroxide in the honey.
Once the mixture has sat for at least 30 minutes...add conditioner to the mixture and whip until it becomes smooth and an applicable consistency.
Apply and leave in for at least 6 hours. When you rinse it out, the cinnamon will be more difficult to wash out than the honey, but your hair will feel amazing! After my first application, my hair was shiny, much fuller, and super soft.
Cinnamon is great for scalp health and aides in healing dry scalp and dandruff.
Honey also has many benefits, and the capability to seal moisture in, as well as provide the nourishment needed at the root.
I noticed more red and gold tones in my hair after the first application.
*More noticeable results can be achieved in 5 consecutive applications, no more than 2 days apart. Repeat once weekly to maintain.
2. Tea and/or Coffee to darken hair
Stains your hair! Need I say more? Basically, you just boil about 1-2 cups of water. Add 5-10 tea bags, depending on the length and thickness of your hair. Let it sit and brew for 20 minutes or so, then add 1 more cup of water.
Either pour the mixture over your hair, brush onto desired sections or strands, or you can simply pour the mixture into a spritzing bottle (the latter is the easiest in my opinion) and spray in. Rinse after 2 hours.
This is a great, simple, and healthy method for covering grays!!!
If you want to do the coffee approach, brew a pot (10 cups) of strong, dark roast coffee, let it cool, and choose your method of application (spraying, brushing, or pouring on hair).
The caffeine in coffee and black tea stimulates your scalp, which encourages hair growth. How cool is that!?
3. Lemon and salt water on a sunny day to lighten hair
A squeeze of lemon, a pour of salt, about a 2 tablespoons of hair conditioner or liquid coconut oil, and 6 ounces of water. Spray it on and enjoy the sunshine! Brings out gold and blonde highlights :)
*Keep in mind that lemon and salt can be a bit harsh on hair, but much less than that of bleach. Just use a bit of conditioner or oil (coconut, almond, grapeseed, olive) to counter the drying effects of the salt and lemon.
4. Chamomile tea on a sunny day to lighten hair
This is the same mixing process as the black coffee /tea to stain hair, except chamomile has lightening properties, rather than staining ones. Chamomile tea is made from the flowers of the plant, which are infused with vitamins, and nourishment.
When used on the hair, it provides the nutrients needed for a healthy scalp and roots. It is known to provide relief from scalp irritation also, and adds a beautiful shine to your hair!
Simply just boil 1-2 cups of water, add 5-10 tea bags, let it sit for at least 20 minutes, then add 1 more cup of water and the juice of half a lemon (optional).
Spray, brush, or pour onto hair, and go and enjoy the sunshine for a few hours.
This method works great and is my personal favorite!
Especially when mixed with a squeeze of lemon. After spending a few hours in the sun, I noticed a big difference... it brought out softer shades of gold and blonde in my hair, whereas all the other methods brought out more gold and red tones. You can experiment with each of these methods, to figure out which is best for you and your hair type.
Changing the color drastically, can be achieved with a little patience, and in the meantime, you're giving your hair and scalp unbeatable nourishment and protection.
