Indoor Herb Garden: Tips and Tricks!

My passion for gardening started with me making a random trip to Home Depot and just so happening to spy some quaint (I love this word!) ceramic pots, that were on sale for $1.50.  Had I not ventured into Home Depot on that sunny Spring day,  I likely would have never started this hobby that has brought me undoubtable joy!

In the months since scoring my little chalkboard pots, my entire home has transformed. Once empty spaces are now filled with beautiful greenery.  There's not hardly anywhere you look in my house, that you won't see green life. :)
The plants that I garden indoors are low maintenance and pleasing to look at, but beyond that, they each come with their own beauty and purpose.

From my experience, most herbs grow best  in a light potting mix.  I tried using my own compost once, ( pig poo and topsoil)  but some of the herbs didn't do well....so I switched to Miracle Grow Indoor Potting Soil, for houseplants.  It works great!

I also recommend planting indoor herbs in a self-draining pot, or if you don't have a self-draining pot, put some small rocks or pebbles in the bottom of whatever you choose and be sure not to over-water. Indoor herbs only need to be watered a few times each week.  The soil should be completely dry up to an inch down.  I've learned that it's okay to let them get a little thirsty.  It makes them stronger!  When I first grew herbs indoors, I watered the plants every two days, but some of them got all floppy and died!
It sucked...but, after it happening to like, 4 or 5 of them,
I realized I was over-watering. Since cutting back to only watering twice a week, my plants have all grown in size, and are healthy and beautiful!

You will also want to keep most herbs in a place where they can get lots of sunlight.  A windowsill is ideal.  I've transformed TV trays, trunks, and various junk store finds into showcase tables for my plants and herbs.  As long as they're placed in or near a sunny window, they will do great!

It's important to turn your pot every other week or so, especially if you keep your herbs in the windowsill.  Turning the pot lets the other side of the plant get sunlight!

Some great indoor herbs to get you started are Mint, Thyme, Parsley, Basil, Oregeno, and Sage.

There are different types of each! Herbs are great for cooking and drink recipes, as well as medicinal uses.

That Time My 9 Year Old Gave Me The Bird

An old Cherokee Indian, teaching his grandson about life...“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.  “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”   He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.  The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”   The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.” A few months ago, I told my son (9) to go take out the trash. He didn't do it. In fact, almost every time I asked him to do it, he would "forget." When I found him outside, I said: "Hey, I told you to take out the trash." He got a bad attitude. Rolle...

Hey...Let's Catch Up

Hey guys.... I know I've been somewhat absent lately, and so, I want to take some time to catch up! Before I get into it all though, I want to say thank you to everyone who reads my blog... When I first started Crazies & Daisies, I did it as a hobby and for an outlet... I never saw it going anywhere and put off starting it for years because of the fear of  judgement... and failure...and more judgement  Once it took off though, I started letting you guys in more and more, and you kept on reading. Y'all are my inspiration, and my motivation to keep writing.  So Thank You! Now for the catching up... this is gonna be deep... I don't do shallow, I suck at sugar coating stuff, and most of all, I feel it is almost a calling of mine-- to be real with people. To let them in on my messy, unfiltered, unedited life. So here goes... Life has been full of highs and lows for the past several months. One big c...
